NYE - be safe!

Hey all!

I know it's been awhile since I last posted on the blog, but I feel that today is as good as any to talk about drinking and driving.

Since it is NYE and either you're off work and starting early or going out tonight, you should make sure you have a designated driver. If you think you're going to be drinking at all, have a DD. You don't want to have a bad start to 2019.

Which brings me to earlier this year. The beginning of March, I got a DUI. I had attended a beer fest in Lawrence, told myself I wouldn't drink that much but unfortunately I drank that much and then decided to drive back home, to KCMO.

I made an incredibly stupid decision.

Want to know how much a DUI costs? Let me break it down for you:

Bail - $500
Lawyer fees - $2000 (still owe $396)
Diversion fees - $310
8 hour drug/alcohol class - $150
Diversion monitor - $150
MADD victim panel - $40
Interlock - $70/month
UA's - $16 (each time you go)
Restricted license - $100

So far, I have paid $3197.

That's just the financial aspect of a DUI. And I still owe money, still have time on my diversion, and still have the interlock on my car for, really, I don't know how long - a year or two?

The day I had to tell my kids that mommy made a mistake and will soon have to have this contraption on her car just to drive it, made me so embarrassed. It's even more embarrassing when my interlock fails - not because I've been drinking, but because it was the morning and I was rushing to get out of the house with the kids and didn't brush my teeth or because I ate fruit snacks for lunch and didn't think about it by the time I had to leave to go pee.

The disappointment I have had in myself and from others, made me really depressed for awhile. I already have depression and anxiety, so it just made my days more draining.

And now, about three months from my 'year anniversary' I'm still disappointed and embarrassed. I f-'d up, I can't take it back. But I have and will continue to learn from this. That's all I can do. And not make the same mistake again.

DUI's are no joke.

I'm not here to preach to you about what you do. I just don't want you to go through what I've had to this past year, nor do I want you to hurt yourself or someone else.

Stay safe out there, KC. PLEASE have a designated driver (uber/lyft/taxi/your mom) tonight. Cheers!
